The 80's

The 80's were a time of change and innovation in fashion. It was the decade in which we saw the rise of supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington; it was also the era that gave us some of our most iconic designers like Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. 

The 80s were a decade of boldness and experimentation. It was the time when designers started to experiment with different silhouettes, textures and colours. The runways were full of over-sized silhouettes, wild accessories, bright colours and bold makeup.  

As people became wealthier than ever before (and therefore had more disposable income), they spent more money on fashion. This meant that there were plenty of opportunities for young designers looking to break into the industry by creating new styles or taking existing ones further than anyone else had done before. 

The Supermodels 

The 80's was the era that created the supermodel. This group of women defined what it meant to be beautiful. The most famous supermodels include Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Jerry Hall, Brooke Shields and Christy Turlington. These women have been on countless magazine covers over the years and have appeared in a number of TV beauty and fashion adds.  

The Designers 

The designers of the 80's were some of the most influential in modern fashion. These designers include Gianni Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent. They were also known for their contributions to popular culture with their designs that helped shape pop culture. 

Gianni Versace was an Italian fashion designer who started his career as a pattern maker before opening his own fashion house in Milan at age 24. His bold designs featured bright colours and prints that were inspired by Greek mythology as well as nature itself - making him one of the first designers to incorporate elements like flowers into clothing design! His work was known for being feminine yet sexy which made it perfect for women who wanted something different than what everyone else was wearing at that time period." 

The Music Scene 

In the 80's, music was just as much of a phenomenon as fashion. The era had some of the most iconic musicians in history, including Michael Jackson and Madonna. Prince was another artist who made waves during this time period with his unique sound and style; he also inspired many other artists to follow suit in their own ways! Queen and Duran Duran were two more popular bands from this era that helped define what it meant to be "80s" musically speaking. 

The Icons 

Madonna was known for her unique style and often wore outfits that were heavily influenced by punk rock culture--including leather jackets and ripped tights. She also helped popularize lace gloves as part of her look during this era! Another icon who made waves with her look was Cyndi Lauper; she frequently wore colourful dresses with large bows on them during concerts or appearances on TV. 

The Fashion  

• Power dressing: This was a style that was inspired by the powerful women who wore it. It's all about shoulder pads and bright colours, which were meant to give you an air of authority. 
• Big shoulders: The idea behind this look is that bigger shoulders make you look more powerful, so many of the dresses had sleeves that extended beyond where your arms would normally end. 
• Ripped jeans: If you're going for power dressing, then why not also wear ripped denim? It shows off how tough and independent you are! 
• Neon accessories: Neon accessories were popular because they were so eye-catching--and they matched perfectly with any other neon clothes in your wardrobe!

• Sixteen Candles (1984) 

The Television Scene 

• Miami Vice. This show was a huge hit in the 80's, and it had a lot to do with its style. The characters were dressed in sharp suits, dark shades and lots of gold jewellery. The music was also pretty cool--it was like nothing anyone had ever heard before! 
• Dynasty. Dynasty is another big hit from this era that still holds up today thanks to its fashion sense. You can see elements of this show's style in shows like Gossip Girl or Revenge.
